It makes me sad.
I met a 50 year old man today.

He was drunk and incapable. He was shouting and swearing and could hardly stand up. I sat him on a bench and tried to talk to him but he was too drunk and angry to listen to me. He was well dressed and well spoken but he had a carrier bag with three bottles of cider in it (white lightning, the alcoholics champagne) and he was covered in scars from self harming.
This man was telling me bout his life before he started drinking. That he had had a building company in south America, (I presume Brazil as he kept telling me that I looked like a Bazillion girl he once knew!) He told me how he had 9 men working for him, but he didn't elaborate on why he is where he is now. I think that it upset me more because he was a similar age to my Dad, I couldn't help being curious as to where were his children and did he have any grandchildren? The man was so angry.
I took him home and made sure he got in safely, his maisonette was very messy. There were no carpets on the floor and the bathroom looked like it had never been cleaned. Junk was lying everywhere, the rubbish on the floor was at least 2 inches thick. His garden was overgrown and it looked as if the kitchen was a penicillin laboratory.
This man is lonely. He should be at a time in his life when he is enjoying and reaping the benefits of his hard work. Enjoying his middle age with holidays and golf, having a beer with his son and watching his grand children's sports day. Instead he spends his days alone. Drunk.
It makes me sad.
